History of baha'i faith
Baha'i faith originated when Islam came into Persia (former day Iran) in 652 CE and by the 9th century Persia was predominately Islamic. Islam divided into 2 sects Sunni and Shiites. Sunnis believe that Abu Bakr, the prophet's adviser was the first successor or caliph to lead the Muslim state. Shiites believe that God chose Ali (Muhammad's son-in-law) as Muhammad's successor and that his successors are called imams. They are said to be descendants of the Prophet Muhammad. Persia followed mostly Shiites beliefs and that there are twelve imams that are followed, the twelfth one was withdrawn from the world and would never be seen again.
The Baha'i faith was founded in the mid 19th century CE. in Iran by Siyyid' Ali Mohammad a Shitte Muslim in 1844. He was later known as the Bab which is "the Gate" in Arabic. He was sent by God as the Hidden imam and was said to be a special interpreter of the Qur'an. He began spreading Babism in Iran which caused disputes for the government and Shitte leadership. He was later arrested then executed. Proceeding the Bab Mirza Hoseyn' Ali Nuri later known as Baha'u'llah continued to spread the Bab's message. The teachings later evolved into Baha'i faith and Baha'u'llah is known as the founder of the religion. The teachings are spread through various literature of writings and oral history such as the Holy Book, Kitab-i-Aqdas. It is an open religion with rituals, customs and daily prayer. It is made up of many sacred faith days such as the nineteen day fast and Naw-ruz which is the Baha'i new year. The goal of Baha'i faith is to unite every religion without racial, ethnic, class or religious prejudice.
